Growing parking market

Number of parking spaces in Europe

The global auto industry crossed an important threshold in the year 2010 when the number of cars on the world’s roads surpassed one billion. Despite the growing economic gloom, worldwide car sales continue to increase. Another factor that contributes to the density of traffic is the growth of the urban population. Approx. 200,000 people move from rural areas into cities each day, resulting in about 60 million new urbanites each year. It is expected that 70% of the world population would be living in cities by 2050. Even though people have access to better public transportation services, urban traffic, hence the demand for parking will continue to grow.

Car Preferences

According to this survey people’s car preferences have changed little in the past years. In fact, the need for driving one’s own car is slightly increasing. Keeping this in mind, city traffic will further grow. New transportation technologies such as E-Mobility may reduce CO2 emission. However, urban traffic and the need to find parking spaces (including parking for e-vehicle charging stations) will rise.

Travel purposes of car park users

The major travel purpose of car park users is to go shopping. Shop owners should therefore have a major interest in providing clean, secure and comfortable parking locations. Customers do not want to worry about finding a place to park their car. A parking guidance system will provide this comfort feeling and give the customer more time for shopping.
